Better in the Bahamas: Bahamian Grad Finds Academic Success with Online Learning
For Monroe University alumna Deeshan Adderley-Walkes, flexibility in her higher education journey was non-negotiable as a busy working professional.
She chose Monroe’s online Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting program because it allowed her to pursue her degree without putting the rest of her life on hold.
“My motivation to enroll in Monroe’s online program was its flexibility and what it had to offer,” she said. “I was able to be a full-time student without interrupting my personal and professional schedule.”
Seeing other Bahamian students thriving at Monroe kept her motivated to keep working hard, even when the demands of work, college, and personal obligations sometimes felt overwhelming. Deeshan said she consistently felt a strong sense of connection to her classmates, faculty, and advisors, even though her program was fully online.
“I felt connected to everyone,” she said. “Constant communication and quick feedback made it possible.”
Her academic advisor played a critical role throughout her journey.
“My academic advisor was always there to guide me on everything I needed to know,” she added.
When she began the program, she set out with one major goal in mind: to develop a strong foundation in accounting and prepare for a future career in the field. Monroe’s structured format and engaged faculty supported her along the way, helping her achieve that goal. In June 2025, Deeshan earned her bachelor’s degree and participated in an in-person commencement ceremony, walking with her fellow graduates at Radio City Music Hall.
Now a Monroe graduate, she is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey. Earlier this month, she returned to Monroe, enrolling in the online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at King Graduate School.
“Monroe has prepared me well for my next steps as I get ready for my master’s degree,” she said. “The courses helped me build strong study habits and understand business and accounting more clearly.”
Beyond academic knowledge, she gained skills that will serve her well at the graduate level and beyond.
“I learned how to manage my time and stay organized,” she said. “My experience at Monroe made me think more deeply and feel confident in my skills.”
For students considering Monroe’s online programs -- especially those balancing work, family, or living abroad -- her message is simple and encouraging.
“I would tell any student that Monroe’s online programs are flexible and manageable with a busy life,” she said. “The classes are well-structured, and the lecturers provide great support.”
“You can learn at your own pace without feeling stressed. The online resources make it easy to understand the lessons. It’s a good choice if you want a strong education while still handling your personal or work responsibilities.”
Her advice to prospective students? “Take that leap of faith and chase your goals!”
