SNU Professor Marjorie Davis Named Nurse Educator of the Year by GNYCBNA

Congratulations to Professor Marjorie Davis of the School of Nursing for being named Nurse Educator of the Year by the Greater New York Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (GNYCBNA)!

This prestigious award honors educators who demonstrate exceptional commitment to teaching, mentorship, and advancing the nursing profession. Professor Davis was formally recognized at GNYCBNA’s annual Scholarship and Awards Gala on October 11. In addition to Professor Davis’s achievement, Monroe nursing students Caye-Jree Rhône and Briana Deutou were each awarded $1,500 scholarships by the organization.

Professor Davis, who began teaching at Monroe in 2016, expressed deep gratitude for the honor.

“I’m ecstatic,” she said. “The Black Nurses Association is very particular in its selection process, so I’m honored to be chosen out of so many deserving educators. I’m grateful to Dr. Layla Qaabidh for nominating me and for believing in me.”

A proud Bronx native and first-generation college graduate, Davis began her career as a hospital nurse before joining Monroe as an adjunct clinical instructor. She now teaches both clinical and didactic courses within the nursing program, where she is known for her student-centered approach.

“My teaching philosophy is simple: meet students where they are,” she said. “Every student learns differently. My role is to find how each one connects to the material and help them build from there with patience, empathy, and understanding.”

Davis holds an associate degree in nursing from Bronx Community College, and both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Lehman College. She is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Advanced Leadership.

“I tell my students all the time: don’t stop at your Bachelor of Science in Nursing,” she said. “Keep going. Life will make room for your growth if you stay positive and keep climbing the educational ladder.”

Dr. Qaabidh, Dean of the School of Nursing, commended Davis for her unwavering dedication to student success and the nursing profession.

“Nominating Professor Davis for Nurse Educator of the Year was my honor – she gives so much of herself to her students,” Dean Qaabidh said. “She is consistently dedicated, compassionate, and inspiring – traits that are necessary for a truly impactful nursing educator. We are fortunate to have her here at Monroe and in the School of Nursing.”

The Greater New York Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association supports the professional advancement of Black nurses and champions health equity across communities. Each year, it honors outstanding leaders and awards scholarships to rising nursing students committed to making a difference.
