“Monroe prepared me for the real world and gave me the foundation to create opportunities for myself and others.”
Originally from Jamaica, Clive Ruddock was working at a luxury resort when a guest encouraged him to apply to Monroe’s hospitality program. Unbeknownst to him, the guest was a staff member at Monroe University. Soon after their conversation, Ruddock applied and was accepted. His journey began with a move to New York, where he started building the foundation for a career in hospitality.
Ruddock earned an associate degree in Culinary Arts, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Monroe. He is currently continuing his education at Monroe, pursuing a master’s degree in Business Management.
Looking back, Ruddock credits Monroe’s faculty with preparing him for success through their real-world industry experience. Rather than teaching solely from textbooks, his professors brought firsthand knowledge of the hospitality field into the classroom, helping students understand the realities of the industry.
“There were some professors at Monroe that were very instrumental in shaping my career,” Ruddock said. “They really prepared you for the real world.”
As an international student, Ruddock also found a strong sense of community at Monroe. From faculty members who understood the challenges of moving to a new country to administrators who helped him navigate financial obstacles, he said the University’s support made all the difference.
“The doors were always open,” Ruddock said. “From any professor to the president, there was always someone willing to help.”
Today, Ruddock is a partner in two J’OUVERT Caribbean Kitchen restaurants in Atlanta and owns his own hospitality consulting company, CRU Hospitality Management. He is most proud of using the knowledge he has gained throughout his career to create opportunities for others while delivering memorable experiences for guests.
“I’ve been able to take what I’ve learned and create experiences for people while providing opportunities for others,” Ruddock said. “That’s what I’m most proud of.”
Hospitality has always been a part of Ruddock’s life. Inspired by his mother, who was a chef in Jamaica, he developed a passion for cooking at a young age—a passion that continues to drive his work today.
Through the mentorship of dedicated faculty, a supportive campus community, and hands-on industry preparation, Ruddock transformed an unexpected opportunity into a thriving career. Today, he continues to build successful businesses while creating meaningful experiences for his employees and guests.
