Celebrating the People of Monroe: Meet Maria Ortiz

For 34 years, Maria Ortiz has served as a guiding light for Monroe University students. As a Senior Student Services Advisor, Maria's job is to offer encouragement, guidance, support, and occasionally tough love to college students who work with her.

Maria recognizes in order to shine a light forward for others, she must never lose sight of where she came from. A proud Latina and long-serving member of the Monroe community, Maria reminds her students to follow her lead — remember who you are while you dream big here at Monroe. As such, during Hispanic Heritage Month, Maria relishes the 30 days that brings special attention to her heritage.

"It is gratifying to have a month for not only Latinos but everyone to celebrate our culture, food and everything that makes us who we are," she said.

Two years ago, Maria had the honor of serving as Grand Marshal for Monroe’s Class of 2023 Commencement — a well-deserved recognition of her decades of service. Elevating her to such an important role carries tremendous significance — one that wasn't lost on Maria.

"It is important for all of our students to be heard and seen, so being able to see staff and faculty that look like them is very important," she continued.

Despite 34 years in her role at Monroe, Maria still credits one person as her greatest influence: her mother.

“Even though she had very little schooling, she always impressed upon me the importance of education and independence — especially for a Latina woman.”

She carries that same message for her students now. She is part of thousands of Monroe University student success stories.

Thank you, Maria, for sharing your dedication, heritage and heart with our Monroe community.
