Celebrating Alumni Success: Joana Maluta on Her Journey Toward Earning Her CPA

Congratulations to Joana Maluta, an alumna and international student who recently passed all four parts of the CPA exam — on her very first attempt!

This accomplishment is impressive under any circumstances. But for Joana, it came while working full-time and pursuing graduate-level studies, demonstrating not only exceptional discipline and intellect but also unwavering determination.

Originally from Albania, Joana came to the U.S. in search of an education that would offer both academic excellence and a strong sense of community.

“Monroe stood out to me because it felt personal from the very beginning,” she shared. “I felt like I wouldn’t just be another student here.”

After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Monroe, Joana went on to complete her Master of Science in Accountancy at Baruch College. She is now pursuing her MBA at Monroe, focusing on business management, analytics, and information technology.

“Education has always been important to me,” she said. “I’m grateful for the opportunities and connections it’s brought into my life.”

Joana credits Monroe with preparing her for much more than exams. Through its real-world curriculum, professional development resources, and strong support network, Monroe helped her build confidence as a communicator, leader, and global citizen.

“Monroe gave me more than academic knowledge. It taught me to lead, think critically, and navigate professional spaces with confidence,” she said. “The career support, networking events, and faculty mentorship made all the difference.”

Outside the classroom, Joana found another transformative experience: her involvement with the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).

“Being part of NABA has been life-changing,” she said. “The network, the mentorship, the events—it all helped me visualize a clear path toward the CPA and beyond.”

Today, Joana works as an Audit and Assurance Senior at Deloitte, specializing in private equity clients. She credits her internships at Deloitte and EY for giving her critical early exposure to the field and setting the foundation for her career.

To students considering the CPA path, especially those juggling work and school, Joana offers this advice: “Start early. Understand the requirements, make a schedule, and stick to it. Use the resources Monroe offers—join clubs, attend networking events, and don’t hesitate to ask professors for guidance.”

But above all, she says, stay rooted in your purpose.

“Most importantly, remember your why—why you started this journey in the first place. That will carry you through the tough days."

Her message is particularly powerful for international students navigating unfamiliar systems and self-doubt.

“If you're questioning your worth or wondering if you’ll find your place—know that you absolutely can,” Joana said. “Monroe helped me believe in my own potential. I hope my story reminds others that no dream is too far, as long as you walk the path with intention, humility, and courage.”

We cannot wait to see what you do next, Joana!
