Curriculum
Through this program, you will learn about the structure, function, and organization of healthcare systems, including public health agencies, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. Courses include a foundation in the basic sciences relevant to health, including biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology. Furthermore, you will develop what is known as cultural competency – the ability to provide healthcare services that are respectful of, and responsive to, the needs of an aging and diverse population.
An important part of the curriculum is an internship experience which provides you with an opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills obtained in the classroom in a variety of professional environments. In addition, you receive on-the-job training in the career of your choice.
How long does it take to get a B.S. in Health Sciences?
As a full-time program, and with Monroe’s unique three semesters per year scheduling, this 121-credit program can be completed in in less than three years.

- 60 credits of major-related courses
- 61 credits of general education and related courses
The School of Allied Health Professions also offers flexible scheduling alternatives, with both fully online and hybrid class options.
Cultural Competency in Health Care
This course focuses on how to effectively provide cross- cultural services and develop an awareness of the biases and prejudices that can hamper communication, compliance, and outcomes in the health care industry. Students explore some of the critical issues in working with culturally diverse populations, and are trained to develop a higher level of cultural competency.
Admission Requirements
All applicants to the BS degree in Health Sciences must submit:
- Either a high school graduation credential or high school equivalency diploma, or a recognized college associate degree or higher as listed in the transfer admission policy.
- A completed application for admission, as well as a personal statement or essay.
Applicants also participate in a pre-admission interview
