Early Childhood Dual Specialization The MAT early childhood education program culminates in a dual degree in regular and special education for children from birth to second grade, particularly those in an urban environment. The program offers a 12-month, full-time and part-time course of study, combining on campus and online courses. You'll graduate prepared for New York State teacher certification, including passing the edTPA.
Childhood Dual Specialization The childhood program culminates in a dual degree in regular and special education for students in grades 1-6, particularly those in an urban environment. The childhood specialization MAT program offers a 12-month, full-time and part-time course of study, combining on campus and online courses. You'll graduate prepared for New York State teacher certification, including passing the edTPA.

For candidates interested in earning teacher certification for the first time:
NYS Education Department requires that individuals in teacher preparation programs leading to Initial Certification must:
have earned 60 liberal arts credits with a C- or above, and
have successfully completed at least 6 credits each (in semester-long courses) of college-level English, mathematics, science, and social science with a grade of C- or above.
The King Graduate School Admissions Department will review your transcript and determine if you have met these requirements. Monroe University offers a semester of undergraduate Foundation Courses to assist you in meeting the requirements, although you may choose to complete them at any accredited, approved college. All requirements must be met prior to acceptance into the master's in teaching online program.
The Curriculum
The Master of Arts in Teaching is a 42-credit, dual degree program consisting of 10 core courses and two student teaching courses, plus submission of the edTPA for Students with Disabilities (SWD), as required for New York State certification. Certified teachers need just 33 credits to graduate.

You will need a bachelor's degree with 60 credits in liberal arts to enter the MAT program. Depending on your undergraduate experience, you may be required to take foundation courses before beginning the program. Foundation courses are available on campus and online.
