The Industry Trade Academy at Monroe University (ITAM) provides foundation courses for students to begin a successful career in the Trades. The academy is located at 29 East Fordham Road in the Bronx on the campus of Monroe University. The academy utilizes contextual learning methods which engage students in active learning while assisting them to make meaning out of the information they are obtaining. Contextualized instruction links the learning of foundational skills with academic or occupational content.
The courses at the Industry Trade Academy are mostly intensive 80-hour courses taught within a three-week time frame by experienced instructors in the field.
After successful completion of a course, students will receive a certificate and have the opportunity to meet contractors and developers for potential employment.
Students will need to provide the following:
- Social Security Number
- A U.S. Government photo I.D.
Course information:
- Courses meet Monday-Thursday during the mornings/afternoons and on Saturdays
- Courses start each month of the calendar year
- Course size limited to 25 students for personalized instruction

Courses
Basic Plumbing
In this course, you will learn the basics of plumbing, including theory, code, terminology and safety. You will learn how to install toilets, sinks, kitchen and bathroom faucets, flushometers and diverter valves in our new hands-on shop. You will also learn how to solder copper pipes together as well as install PVC and black iron piping. Learn about water supply systems along with drain, waste and venting. Do all this while learning trade terminology
and construction math.
80 Hours Intensive / Tuition: $1,500
Basic Carpentry
In this course you will learn the basics of carpentry, including drywall repair & installation, framing, laying out drop ceilings, code, industry terminology and safety. In our new hands-on shop, you will learn how to frame up walls, hang doors and install windows. Learn how to identify and use power tools associated with this trade. Gain practical skills and safety awareness through hands-on experience. Do all this while learning trade terminology and construction math. Understand what it takes to be a carpenter’s apprentice and vital part of the building process in today’s construction field.
80 Hours Intensive / Tuition: $1,500
Basic Electrical
In this course you will learn the basics of electricity, including theory, code, circuitry, and safety. Understand how to identify different types of wires, cables, outlets, and switches. You will be laying out and installing different types of circuits, including outlets, lighting and service distribution panels all while learning trade terminology and construction math in our hands-on shop. Understand what it takes to be an electrical apprentice and assist a master electrician on the job in today’s construction field.
80 hours Intensive / Tuition: $1,500
OSHA Construction

40 Hour Intensive / Tuition: $500
Work Zone Flagger Course
The work zone flagger course grants you the ability to work as a certified flagger as required by the department of transportation.. By law, all flaggers must be properly trained in flagging operations and flagging procedures by a certified flagger training Instructor. Completing the flagger certification course you will acquire a strong knowledge in proper flagging techniques and be ready to work on the job as a work zone flagger. All participants will receive a wallet sized Flagger ID card.

OSHA Construction
The OSHA 30-Hour Program is designed to help you create a safe working environment for your workers. It teaches you the systematic approach to preventing and eliminating any work-related hazards. You will learn about the employer’s responsibilities, Hazard Communication Standards, OSHA’s policies and safe work practices. This course is for construction workers, site-safety supervisors, foremen, and safety directors. This course can be taken by anyone seeking advanced level training in the construction field. Upon successful completion of the course, you receive an official Department of Labor OSHA 30 card to carry in your wallet.
